Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects calf muscles at the back of lower leg to your heel bone. The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the body. Achilles tendon facilitates walking by helping to raise the heel off the ground.
Achilles tendonitis is often a running or sports-related injury due to overuse, exercise, jumping and other activities that involve the tendon and calf muscles. Most cases of Achilles tendonitis can be treated with persistent, simple, at-home care under your doctor's supervision. But serious cases of Achilles tendonitis can lead to small tears within the tendon, and make it prone to rupture. This may require surgical intervention.
Surgery involves removing the tendon's inflamed outer covering and reattaching the torn tissues.
After the surgery, you will undergo passive range of motion physical therapy and progressive strengthening exercises for 2-3 weeks. Most activities can be resumed in 6-10 weeks and competitive sports usually can be resumed only after 3-6 months.
